PRESENTING THE PATH Unit 3 of the DISCOVERING BUDDHISM Course Note: New students can join Dicovering Buddhism at the the beginning of any unit. Get an overview of the entire Buddhist path to awakening. Hear about the life story of the Buddha and study the basic teachings of Buddhism. Discover the unique system for putting Buddhist philosophy into practice contained in the Lam Rim, or "graduated path to enlightenment". Gain a clear idea of the path to enlightenment, especially its three main components: renunciation (the determination to emerge from cyclic existence), bodhicitta (the wish to help all others in the best possible way) and the correct view (understanding dependent arising and emptiness as two sides of the one coin). We outline the progressive, step-like structure of the lam-rim, with its origin in the teachings of Guru Shakyamuni Buddha.

We cover the three scopes, and where they fit in our present stage of spiritual development. Discover what to do next, and how to get from here to enlightenment. This may seem like a long unit (14 weeks) but it includes the birthday prayers for HH the Dalai, and special guest speakers Geshe Tashi Tsering and Ven. Robina on different evenings. This particular unit is broken up into three sections, reflecting the sections of the lam rim - small, middling and great scopes. Wednesday evenings, 7 February—18 April 7pm—8.30 pm By donation - suggested $10 (or $5 concession) plus $30 for notes. ABOUT THE TEACHER Eddie Peet has been the resident western teacher at Langri Tangpa Centre since 1997. Not shy of life's dirty reality, several tragic life experiences brought Eddie to Buddhism.

He first met the Dharma when he attended meditation classes with Ven. Pende Hawter, the founder of Karuna Hospice Service. Eddie is a dedicated student of Geshe Tashi Tsering, has attended advanced courses at Chenrezig Institute (the BSP, advanced study in Buddhist philosophy and practice). He has read almost every book in our extensive library. Just ask him about the topic you are interested in, and he can point you the right direction
