Time travel is a real phenomenon when reputations, legends, and values are transmitted from people of the past to our contemporary present. This lecture examines the stories and reputations of four extraordinary women whose lives still influence the modern people of the Maghreb and beyond. While separated in time from one another, they still have much to say to each other and to us: Dido/Elissa, Queen of Carthage; Cleopatra Selene, daughter of Cleopatra Ptolemy and Mark Anthony, Queen of Numidia & Mauretania; Kahina the Jewish Queen of the Berbers & Tin Hinan the Toureg “Mother of Us All’.   Iain Shearer FRAS is an archaeologist who has worked in the UK, Afghanistan, Caucasus, North Africa, Balkans, Israel/Palestine, Central Asia, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, China, Italy, Pakistan, India, and the Middle East over the last 25 years.

Educated at University College London’s Institute of Archaeology, he is the former Sackler Scholar for Afghanistan and Iran at The British Museum and was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland in 2008. This lecture series is sponsored by our friends at Academy Travel. Image Credit: "La Reine Tin Hinan"; Hocine Ziani; Oil on Canvas: March 2007. [].
